Hair Care Product: Hair Shampoo

A bottle of hair shampoo might be the most basic hair grooming product in any bathroom today, but this has not always been the case. In the 17th and 18th centuries, most people did not wash their hair more than once or twice a year. Marie Antoinetter, self indulgent last queen of France, and her peers had said to have used perfumes, potpourri and perfumed candles in a desperate attempt to disguise the resultant odours. Fortunately we no longer need to deal with this anymore now.

Hair Shampoo: Back to Basics
hair shampoo is the most basic of hair care products, designed to clean our hair and scalp. If you are not aware, most hair shampoos are classified as detergents, with the exception of dry, powder hair shampoos that are less effective and tend to leave hair dull-looking.

A good hair shampoo should spread easily over the hair, rinse out, not irritate your skin or eyes and leave your hair manageable. The lather is not actually essential to clean your hair efficiently, but it does offer a guide to how much detergent you are using.

What's in hair shampoo?
Basically a typical hair shampoo should contain the following ingredients:-
  • Cleaning agent. The two most common are ammonium lauryl sulphate and ammonium laureth sulphate, the milder of the two
  • Conditioning agents
  • Additives to control pH and thickness of the hair shampoo. Shampoos are usually slightly acidic, with pH between 3.5 and 4.5
  • Preservatives to prevent hair shampoo from going off or ingredients from decomposing
  • Colourants, perfumes and other ingredients to make hair shampoo enjoyable to use.
  • Some hair shampoo such as anti-dandruff preparations contain zinc pyrithione.
Lastly, wash your hair as often as you need to, daily if necessary but do not use too much hair shampoo, as it won't make your hair cleaner! But some researchers claimed that washing your hair frequently will help to grow your hair faster. Brush your hair before you wash it, this will help to loosen dead skin cells and any dirt sticking to your scalp.
